Obituary for Donald Allen Stebbins

Donald Allen Stebbins, 81, of Irvington, formerly of Locust Hill and widower of Karen Hinton Stebbins, passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2023, at Rappahannock Westminster Canterbury after an extended illness.

Don was born July 2, 1941, in Sioux City, Iowa, to the late Richard G. and Helen (Kozlowski) Stebbins. He grew up in Clear Lake, Iowa, where he graduated high school in 1959.

Don proudly served as an MP in the U.S. Army, then went on to study Police Administration at Michigan State University (’68). Following graduation, he was a deputy sheriff in Lansing, Michigan before joining the United States Secret Service in 1969. During his twenty years as a Special Agent, he served under Presidents Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, and Bush. He later ran his own international security consulting firm, Security Strategies, Inc., before he and Karen retired for good in 2006 and relocated to Locust Hill.

He was a dedicated member Christ Church Parish, where he served on the vestry, sang in the choir, was active in the Men’s Brotherhood, and gave generously of his time wherever a helping hand was needed. Don was also a member of the Association of Former Agents of the United States Secret Service, for which he served on the board of directors.

Don was an intrepid world traveler, glider pilot, and model airplane collector. He loved gardening, antiquing, the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle, and was an avid and eclectic reader.

He is survived by his three children, Deborah Horzen (Jim) of Orlando, Florida, Matthew Stebbins (Jessica) of Merritt Island, Florida, Todd Stebbins of Toledo, Ohio; siblings, Charlene Ostby (Paul), Marlene Greiman, Gary Stebbins (Sherry); grandchildren, John and Anna Horzen, Tyler and Lana Stebbins, Kylan Stebbins; family friends, Grace Parker, and Bentley Parker-Brown.

The family would like to thank Don’s devoted aides, the nurses, and staff at Rappahannock Westminster Canterbury, where he received exceptional care
