Obituary for Leonard V. Paul Jr.

Leonard V. Paul, Jr., 84, of Hardyville, Virginia passed away on July 9, 2020. He was a member of the Church of the Visitation in Topping, VA.

Born in Pennsylvania, Mr. Paul was the son of the late Dorothy Bateman Paul and Leonard V. Paul, Sr. He attended schools in Delaware County, PA, and graduated from Media High School, Media, PA in 1955.

Mr. Paul served with the Pennsylvania Air National Guard for ten years. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

After spending several years in the auto service repair business, Mr. Paul went into the family welding supply business, L.V. Paul & Sons, where he remained for thirty years.

He moved to Virginia in 1991 and opened Delta Welding Supply in Deltaville, which relocated to Hartfield. In 1997, Mr. Paul sold the business to Revere Gas, and he continued to work in the business until his retirement. Retirement didn’t last long. Mr. Paul and his wife opened a model train store, Deltaville Depot, which they operated for five years. He founded the Rappahannock River Railroader’s Train Club in Deltaville.

Mr. Paul spent fourteen years in the Junior Chamber of Commerce, now called the Jaycees. He served on the local level in various offices including President of the Media, PA Jaycees. Later, he founded the Concordville, PA Chapter, and held several offices including President.

He joined the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary in 1972 in West Chester, PA. He served as an instructor, vessel examiner, operations officer, and Flotilla Commander. After moving to Deltaville, he joined Flotilla 66 in Mathews and led the effort for forming a new flotilla, Flotilla 62, in Middlesex County. Mr. Paul served in many capacities, including Flotilla Commander. Later, he moved up to the Peninsula District level, serving as Staff Officer, Vice Captain, and eventually Division Captain.

In 1995, Mr. Paul joined the Mobjack Bay Power Squadron, which later became the Rappahannock Sail & Power Squadron. There he served in many positions and offices.

In 1994, he became a member of the Middlesex Moose Lodge and served in many offices.

Mr. Paul is survived by his wife, Patricia Dougherty Paul, of Hardyville; his son, David Paul of Cobbs Creek, VA; his daughter, Karen Paul of Sacramento, CA; his granddaughter, Mary Colleen Ouellette (Ray Minnick) of Honeybrook, PA; and his sister, Carolyn Shipley of Cambridge, MA. His wife, Ann D. Paul passed away in 2003, and his daughter, Kathleen Anspach, passed away in 2013.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 17th from 4-6 p.m. at Faulkner Funeral Homes, Bristow-Faulkner Chapel, Saluda, VA. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 18th, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be private. Seating will be limited.
