Mary Wade Hudgins Smith, 91, of Mathews, widow of William “Billy” Luther Smith, passed away peacefully at her beloved home on Stutts Creek on Sunday, February 26, 2023.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Capt. Hugh Hudgins and Irene Hudgins; dear aunt, Jeanette “Sissy” Morgan, and uncle, Merritt Morgan.

She is survived by a goddaughter, Kristin Morse; cousins, William Bailey Hudgins and wife Shirley, Brad Hudgins and wife Pam; nephew, Robert Farmer and wife Sheila (Binky).

Mary Wade was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Mathews Yacht Club, the Red Hats Society, and Friends of the Mathews Memorial Library.

She was employed by the Gloucester-Mathews Gazette-Journal from 1953-1977 and also worked in the Virginia General Assembly in the late 1970s.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul’s Annex Cemetery, Susan.
