Obituary

Mildred Lee Shackleford, 78, of Richmond, Virginia, formerly of Urbanna, passed away on February 13, 2020, at Sunrise Assisted Living.

She was born December 23, 1941, in Richmond, Virginia, a daughter of the late Aubrey and Ruth Marshall Wilkes. Mildred was preceded in death by her loving husband of 33 years, R. Stanley Shackleford; and her brother-in-laws, Walter Rosypal, Horace Shackleford, and Earl Shackleford.

She is survived by her sister, Lou Rosypal; brother-in-law George Shackleford, sister-in-law, Virginia Hogge; nieces, Manya Saunders (Scott), Alexa von Dohlen (Joe); three great nephews, Charles, Alex, and Hunter Saunders.

Mildred graduated from Middlesex High School and attended Louisburg College. She then went on to work as a nurse for Mizpah Health Care Center in Locust Hill for over thirty years and loved taking care of people. In her retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at the Second Time Around Thrift Shop in Urbanna. She was also a lifetime member of Urbanna United Methodist Church.

Mildred was an animal lover in every sense. She had a proud succession of dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, and even a few racoons and possums throughout her life. She fed neighbors’ pets, strays, any creature that passed through her yard, and was never without a dog bone in her pocket.

The family would like to thank the staff at Sunrise Assisted Living for their compassion and care these last three years. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, February 22nd in Faulkner Funeral Homes, Bristow-Faulkner Chapel, Saluda. Interment will be in Middlesex Memorial Cemetery, Urbanna. Memorial gifts can be made to the Gloucester/Mathews Humane Society, P.O. Box 385, Gloucester, VA 23061.

Mildred will miss you forever. You gave me and my children so many wonderful memories. Bruce & RD came home many times bandaged from cut, scrapes & Byrnes after you & Yvonne had patched them up. Of course they never told me, just went straight to you because MeMe was the nurse who fixed people.

Worked with you many years. Your wonderful personality and smile kept our patients smiling. Mizpah was your life. Always there for all the residents & staff.

Mother loved you and I know you loved her. Can’t say enough about you but your legacy is etched in the stones & many hearts of families you loved and cared for many years Mildred. Loved you dearly!! The first year I did not get a Christmas card from my Mildred. Knew something was wrong.

Deepest Sympathy to you Lulu. May there be peace in your family. ~ Martha Lou Cottingham
